If you've ever watched the TV show Man v. Food, you know that food challenges are both insane and incredibly entertaining. After watching the nearby "San Jose, California" episode of Man v. Food, we were inspired to find some food challenges for ourselves to conquer! We heard of a new food challenge that had sprung up, a 4 pound sushi challenge. Needless to say, for the sake of entertainment and checking out a hip new restaurant in San Francisco, we quickly made a reservation. Good lord we had no idea what we were getting into
Though Japanese food was once considered a rare, exotic treat, sushi has really become a world phenomenon. With exotic nigiri available at fusion restaurants to cheap sushi rolls at your local 7-11, sushi truly has spread far and wide. Perhaps the most interesting thing about sushi is how much each country and culture has adapted and adopted the food in its own culture. For us here in America? We love rolls. California rolls, tempura rolls, Philly rolls, you name it, we've made it and ate it. Quite appropriately, the sushi challenge over at "Bay Shabu Sushi Sake" in San Francisco is indeed a behemoth, garguntuan roll. Behold, the "Killer Whale roll"
4 lbs of rice, seaweed, spicy tuna, eel, shrimp, crap, avocado, tempura, tobiko, sweet potato, sauce, etc. this thing truly is a beast. The challenge is quite straight forward: Finish the entire roll in 30 minutes or under. No throwing up, no sharing, no BS. Succeed, and the meal is free and you earn a place on the "Wall of Fame." Fail, and you pay $30 and get a photo on the "Wall of Shame"
For the challenge I recruited my best friend who, despite his skinny frame, has been referred to as the "black hole" when it comes to eating. Combined with the fact that he absolutely loves Japanese food and sushi, hell I was ready to order him two!
After signing the waiver (which included a possibility of death warning!), the challenge got started. The roll itself is literally about the length and width of an arm, consisting of 17 pieces, each about 4 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches in width. Round 1, FIGHT!
Blazing through the first half in under 15 minutes we truly thought we had this challenge in the bag:
Then, the food coma hit.
Literally fighting until the last minute, the "black hole" couldn't do it.
Still, an impressive 13 pieces were consumed, more than all three other challengers that night combined!
I have to say everybody was impressed. I had a slice of the leftovers and was already full, making 13 pieces unfathomable! To put it into the grand perspective, only a handful of pictures made up the wall of fame yet the entire left wall of the building was the wall of shame.
It was a wild adventure to say the least, and I predict we'll be going back for a rematch soon after some hard core training. To all you foodies out there, see what crazy challenges are in your area! Stay tuned for when we try the 4 lbs of Vietamese Pho challenge and the Habanero Burger battle.
